I'm a Sydney-based cinematographer and Steadicam operator with 15 years of experience across feature films, television, and commercials.
Before moving to Australia, I studied photography and specialised in it for a decade. During this time my highest achievements were giving a solo exhibition in The Finnish Museum of Photography with documentarian art project Terrarium; receiving the title Young Photojournalist of the Year; and winning the grand prize at My RØDE Reel with short film Thin Ribbon. Fascinated by sound, rhythm and time as storytelling devices, I found my way into video editing, multimedia, and experimental filmmaking. My career in motion rocketed, with the first years busy in dance films, documentaries, music videos, branded content, and TVC's.
My background is in painting and web design. I'm passionate about on-screen world building, intricate lighting, and characted-driven camera movement. I lead with clarity and empathy. I colour grade, and develop the software MIDIGrade. I'm an accredited member of Society of Camera Operators (SOC).
My family name Koivistoinen means forest of birch trees, pronounced "quivers + toy + [nen]".
